Breaking: Medical doctor loses battle to Lassa fever in Kogi

- A doctor at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja has died of Lassa Fever

- Idowu Ahmed contracted the disease in the line of his duty at the health facility

- He died after he was transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Irrua, Edo state

A medical doctor at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, in Kogi state, Idowu Ahmed, has lost his battle to Lassa fever.

Idowu, The Cable reports died after he contracted the Lassa virus in the line of his duty.

He died on Sunday, January 21, at the Federal Medical Centre, Irrua, Edo state.

A source said: “He died today. Lassa fever took him. He just secured placement for houseman-ship at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja."

The medical director of the FMC Lokoja had on Friday, January 19, told journalists that one of the hospital's male doctor had been diagnosed with the virus.

Olatunde Alabi said the victim’s blood sample which was sent to Irrua facility tested positive.

He added that all the people who came in contact with the doctor - both at home and place of work - had been placed under surveillance.

The medical director also said that the FMC in partnership with relevant stakeholders had commenced contact tracing to enable it get the source of the disease.

Alabi said this monitoring would help ascertain if there was any other victim within the community where the doctor resides.

Alabi had said the doctor would receive further treatment at the Irrua facility.
