The article below was written by Olumuyiwa Babatunde Amao, Doctoral candidate in the Department of Politics, University of Otago, in New Zealand, Thursday, 17 July, 2014 for Leadership newspaper.
Pakistani rights activist Malala Yousafzai's visit to Nigeria sparked strong criticism of Goodluck Jonathan's inaction to curb violence by Boko Haram, especially in the wake of the kidnappings. As well as many Nigerians Amao is shocked that Pakistani rights campaigner Malala Yousafzai has specially arrived to Nigeria to meet the girls' relatives, while the president has not spoken to their families, exactly three months after the abductions.
The president allegedly planned to travel to Chibok in May, but his trip was reportedly cancelled due to security issues. Then the next attempt with the meeting reportedly scheduled for July 15th also failed, however, it's still unclear who - the president or the parents - initiated the cancellation of a such important for the whole Nigeria event.
