PHOTOS: OP MESA Use Force Against TASUED Students Who Protest Over Fees, Destroy University Property

The students of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State started a riot against the university management's decision to suspend from exams those who did not pay the tuition fees.

The protest started at about 2:00pm 10th of June 2014 when 200 Level students of the school were not allowed to write the on-going 2013/2014 first semester examination. The enraged students destroyed exams paper, school staff automobiles, windows in the Admission Block, The Vice Chancellor's office and other properties within the school premises.

The protesters brutally attacked the school security and journalists all around. In an attempt to take control of the situation and curb the angry crowd, the school security operatives used weapons. After awhile the Operation MESA arrived at the scene of the incident spraying tear gas.

According to unconfirmed reports, the OP-MESA seized the Ijagun road that leads to the school second gate and a link road to major hostels within the campus as they apprehend innocent passers-by mainly male and torture them mercilessly. Those who stayed in the hostels the OP-MESA members brutally beat and handed over to the police.

The number of injured students was not specified but there's information that the Student Union Government, SUG, President sustained injury on the head, his Gen Sec got injured on the left hand, the SUG Speaker also sustained an injury on the leg, one more student was said to be shot in the waist. Also some Nigerian sources report about 50 students who were arrested but later were released.

Asked about the incident, the Vice-Chancellor of TASUED, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade said that the protest was caused by the Student Union Leaders whom she blamed for being unreasonable and ignorant to the laws of the institution.
