Family, Activists Remember Kudirat Abiola, 18 Years After Assassination

Family members of Mrs. Kudirat Abiola together with pro-democracy activists and civil society leaders gathered in Lagos today, June 4, at the tomb of late democracy heroine Chief MKO Abiola to remember her life and times.

Eighteen years ago, wife of the winner of the June 12 1993 Presidential election, Mrs. Abiola was murdered on the orders by military dictator, Sanni Abacha. The assassination was carried out by a killer squad maintained and led by Major Hamza Al-Mustapha.

After several years in prison on trial, Al-Mustapha and his collaborators were set free under mysterious circumstances by a compromised panel of appeal court judges, ostensibly on the orders and direction of President Goodluck Jonathan.
