Man In Court For Announcing He Is Boko Haram Member In Lagos Bank
A 27-year-old worker, Francis Mokwe, who scared bank customers in Lagos by announcing that he is a Boko Haram member, was taken before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on Friday, May 30.
According to the prosecutor Olanrewaju Balogun, the accused committed the offence at 9.00 a.m. at a branch of Stanbic-IBTC Bank in the metropolis by announcing publicly that he belongs to the extremist Boko Haram group.
Mr. Mokwe caused panic and confusion among customers and bankers at the Agungi-Lekki branch of the bank.
According to police, the accused walked into the hall of the bank supposedly for a transaction, but started shouting: "I am a Boko Haram member," he also wrote "Boko-Haram" on the teller in his hand.
"The accused was immediately taken out of the banking hall by security guards, who handed him over to the authorities," the police prosecutor said.
Mr. Balogun noted that the offence contravened Section 166 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Helen Omisore, granted the man bail in the sum of N10,000 with a surety in like sum.
She adjourned the case till June 18 for mention.
