Police Pledge to Protect Nigerians, Enforce Their Fundamental Rights

Nigeria Police Force have pledged to protect Nigerians and enforce their fundamental rights enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, including those to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.

The police were apparently responding to the news of Nigeria Police Force officers obstructing or preventing #BringOurGrilsBack demonstrations to be held accross Nigeria. The protesters have been demanding more government action towards securing the release of over 200 Chibok female students who remain in Boko Haram captivity since April 14, 2014.

The statement was posted to the official website of the force and signed by CSP, Public relations officer Frank Mba.

According to the statement, Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar has ordered the law enforcement agencies to provide adequate security to citizens embarking on rallies and other peaceful demonstrations. The IGP also urged leaders and organizers of such rallies to collaborate with the police to facilitate their work, and to take measures to deter hoodlums from hijacking the assemblies.

IGP Abubakar has also assured that everything is done to secure the release of the abducted Chibok girls.

Boko Haram have issued a number of videos claiming responsibility for the abduction, showing the girls and imposing options for their release. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police have offered a N50 million reward to anyone who comes forward and discloses information that could eventually lead to locating and rescuing the girls.
