SERAP Urges UN Security Council To Pose Sanctions On Boko Haram
SERAP urges UN Security Council to pose sanctions on Boko Haram and those, protecting it to end the attacks.
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, urges the UN Security Council to “impose targeted sanctions against Boko Haram and their backers to end persistent attacks against children and other civilians.”
The statement by SERAP was issued on May 11th, 2014, signed by the executive director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, and noted that according to the Resolution 2068, signed in 2012, the UN Security Council stated that it was ready to adopt necessary sanctions aimed at armed groups just like Boko Haram that continue to violate the rights of children in armed conflicts like kidnapping and attacks on schools.
“With over 200 Chibok schoolgirls still missing having been abducted by Boko Haram, now is the time for the Council to show that it can deliver on its mandate and implement its resolution when it matters most,” the statement said.
Moreover, the group indicated that the council should co-operate with the African Union and the ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, on this matter.
According to SERAP these sanctions would show that the Council stands strongly and follows the words it says on paper.
Moreover, the group stated that: “Accountability remains an integral element both to address and prevent violations against children. It should begin with targeted sanctions against Boko Haram and their backers.”
