Amaechi Says Unemployment Has Increased Terrorism In Nigeria

The Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, declared that lack of opportunities for Nigerian youths influenced the increasing level of terrorism in the country. He made the statement during the meeting with a delegation of U.S. diplomats in the Government House in Port Harcourt on April 28, 2014, Monday.

The governor explained that fighting the unemployment and provision of equal opportunities to Nigerians to do legitimate business and earn income would address the crisis in the country.

He also urged the Federal Government to add more value to its security operations and conflict reduction strategy in order to achieve the needed peace in the country.

Amaechi further told the diplomats that opportunities for conflicts are nurtured by poverty, which is everywhere in Nigeria.

The governor appealed to the ruling class and the elite to make useful contributions that would assist the Federal Government to tackle terrorism in the North-Eastern part of the country.

In his turn, the United States Assistant Secretary of State of Bureau for Conflict Stabilization and Operations, Rick Barton, said he was interested in a peaceful transition of government in future. The Ambassador of the United State Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, expressed the need for the Nigerian Government to promote reconciliation as a workable measure towards reducing tension and violence in the country.
