Islamic Cleric in Court for Extorting N1.2 million from Busienssman

33-year-old Islamic cleric is facing charges for allegedly extorting N1.2 million from a businessman.

Abdullakeem Sulaimon faced Ota Senior Magistrates' Court in Ogun State today. He is standing trial on a three-count charge of obtaining by false pretence, stealing and conspiracy.

According to the prosecution, on December 18, 2013, Sulaimon, together with another person still at large, compelled one Adam Iginla to hand them the money so they could "perform" some sort a ritual assuring that any business started with the money would be successful. However, the cleric refused to return the money to the businessman despite several demands.

Sulaimon pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be recalled that Section 419 of the Criminal code prescribes 15 years imprisonment for fraud.

The Magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned till May 19.
