Should I Marry a Man Who Lied and Proposed With a Fake Diamond Ring?

Partners in a relationship are supposed to support each other when times are tough, and true love is not about wealth or luxury. It is another thing, though, when your significant other lies to you in order to conceal the true state of things. A young woman's relationship is put to test as she doubts if she should stay with a man who behaves as a coward.

I'm 24, from Lagos, and have been in a relationship with a divorced 42-year-old Victoria Island businessman. He is my first serious romantic interest, so I'm quite attached. We've had many ups... and currently having a down.

We had had a brief break-up, and I went to another state to see my relatives. He arrived there and proposed with a diamond ring!

I accepted his proposal, of course, though the ring seemed slightly wrong somehow. When I returned home, I took the ring to a well-known jeweler who said it was fake. I was so humiliated, as I'd already shown the ring to my family and friends!

When I confronted him, he finally admitted that his divorce had undermined his financial well-being, so he couldn't afford the really expensive ring he wanted to present me. That's why he'd had a copy made. Three days ago, he took me to a store and bought another ring, much more modest but genuine.

I think I'm in love with him, but he shouldn't have lied to me. It's not about his money, after all, and he acted like a coward. So do I stay engaged or not?
