North-East Governors Ask INEC Not To Postpone 2015 Polls In Their States

Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states governors appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with the request not to postpone the 2015 general elections in these states, which are mostly affected by insurgency.

In a statement issued on Wednesday they asked the electoral body to ignore the calls by some politicians for the postponement. In the opinion of the governors, INEC should courageously hold the elections like it was made last Saturday in Afghanistan, the country also facing terrorism challenges.

The statement partially reads:

"Afghanistan was celebrated worldwide for liberating herself from the scourge of fear, thereby sending a strong signal that no threat would prevent them from choosing their leaders through democratic processes."

Again, referring to the experience of Afghanistan, the governors stressed the importance of providing adequate security for the conduct of the polls.
