Nigerian Army Sends 700 Soldiers To Liberia On Peacekeeping Mission

700 Nigerian soldiers are to be deployed to Liberia on a peacekeeping mission, according to the the General Officer Commanding 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Tamunomieibi Dibi. This comes amidst Boko Haram insurgency in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.

Major-General Dibi's representative Brigadier-General Abubakar Maikobi made the announcement on Thursay, at the graduation ceremony of the troops from Pre-deployment Training at the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre (NAPKC), Jaji, Kaduna State.

The troops are to depart on Friday.

The troops were urged to respect the culture and religion of Liberia's citizens, demonstrate bravery and fight professionally to protect the law-abiding civilians and themselves in the mission area.

It is worth noting that the deployment of Nigerian Army soldiers is made amidst the rise of Boko Haram insurgency in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. Since May last year, an emergency rule has been imposed on Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. Thousands of Nigerian troops have been sent to the area to help curb terrorist activities, and some of Nigeria's soldiers have been pulled out from African peacekeeping missions to their aid.

But despite the military's maneuvers in the affected states, the terrorist acts are still being carried out in 2014, costing hundreds of lives and damaging property.

Many residents and political office holders in the affected states have demanded the deployment of more soldiers and improved arms and ammunition to the areas.
