Amaechi's Screening Adjourned To Thursday

According to a recent update, the Nigerian Senate has again deferred the anticipated screening of Rotimi Amaechi.

The Red Chamber will also not hold the plenary on Wednesday, October 21, as scheduled, PM News reports with reference to the statement to the Senate clerk Nelson Oyewoh. It was stated that the exercise would now take place on Thursday.

Amaechi's screening was initially set to take place last week. However, there was a delay over the report expected from the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.

Another round of the ministerial screening was conducted yesterday, with the former governor of Rivers state having again failed to undergo the procedure.

Speaking on the matter, the All Progressives Congress expressed confidence that no amount of petitions against the nomination would stop the screening of Amaechi.

Unless the Senate confirms or formally rejects Amaechi by Thursday, October 29, he will be sworn in automatically. Vanguard quotes a provision from the Nigerian constitution:

"An appointment to any of the offices aforesaid shall be deemed to have been made where no return has been received from the Senate within 21 working days of the receipt of nomination by the Senate."
