Polls: 760 Candidates Jostle For 29 Governorship Seats

As Nigerians get ready to march to the polls to elect new governors and new state legislators, many pray for a repeat of the peaceful elections on March 28 and March 29.

Today, 760 candidates are vying for governorship seats in 29 states across the nation while 5,290 candidates are contesting for positions in the state Houses of Assembly in 36 states.

Ahead of the elections, This Day reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken measures to address the problems of the late arrival of materials and officials at some polling units across the country and the seeming lack of proficiency in the use of the Smart Card Reader (SCR) by some ad-hoc staff, which characterised the presidential and National Assembly elections.

In the area of logistics, the INEC has reaffirmed its Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers. It also retrained its ad-hoc staff who would administer the Smart Card Reader.

It further said that Robust Technical Support Teams of the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) department would be deployed to troubleshoot and fix Smart Card Readers where they fail to work.

There will be no governorship elections in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Kogi states because the tenures of the governors are yet to expire.
