Most Memorable Events Of Obasanjo's Year

Some say that when a person reaches a particular respectable age, one's life changes, and becomes so-to-say slower.

Well, this is not the case for Nigeria's former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who marks his 78th birthday March 5, 2015, Thursday.

This year has been marked for OBJ by a series of important events. Some of them were festive, and some - not.

However it is an accomplished fact that after all, the prominent Nigerian remains strong and active. And, no doubt, influential in the world of Nigeria's politics.

Let us recall the things that Chief Obasanjo would memorize from his 77th year.

1. His daughter had a beautiful wedding

Damilola Obasanjo finally married her long-time boyfriend in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The traditional wedding ceremony was held May 9. Interesting the wedding took place just the next month after President Goodluck Jonathan's daughter had tied the knot with her heartrob in Abuja.

2. His son gets shot during the fight against Boko Haram.

In September, Obasanjo received one the worst pieces of news a father can receive.

His son Adeboye, an army engineer, was a Lieutenant Colonel at the 3rd Division in Jos, Plateau State, was wounded in Baza.

On the next day after the attack the former President already provided the information to the press saying that his boy was in stable condition at hospital.

Luckily, OBJ's son survived, but 24 soldiers of the command lost their lives in an unfortunate incident.

3. His autobiography wahala

The book entitled "My Watch" was released in December and contained a lot of unpleasant paragraphs about Jonathan and his administration. The former President called his colleague names like selfish, callous and incapable, among others.

Interestingly, the book was out even after the court had forbidden the release of the autobiography. The order was issued as the book contained information related to a particular suit which was pending the determination.

Soon the court ordered security to confiscate the available copies.

4. His scandalous quit from the Peoples Democratic Party

It came as a real shock to many, that Obasanjo, one of the founding members of the party, suddenly announced his exit. Moreover, he instructed his aide to tear his membership card.

Needless to say that the move was followed by plenty of reactions of different character. What is more, these reactions still continue and probably will, at least until the conduct of the postponed general elections.

5. Done with politics, but now with sports though!

One day before his 78th birthday Obasanjo showed his football skills in a duel with the Ogun State Executive Team, led by the governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun. There was number 78 on the back of the captain's T-shirt. OBJ scored... twice (nope, not 78 times) and won the Golden boot.

After the event he noted: "Even at my age I cherish sport, because it is relevant to health and we should all endeavour to engage in sporting activities."

And we could not agree more.

Happy birthday, Mr Obasanjo! All the best to you on this festive day!
