Niger State Speaks on Commissioner's Abduction, Reveals Next Plan

Tafa LGA, Niger- Family of the kidnapped Niger state commissioner for information, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Idris, has started negotiating with the abductors of the commissioner, the state government revealed.

The government confirmed that the abductors of the commissioner have contacted the family and are demanding a ransom of N500million, ThisdayLive reports.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, told the newspaper in a telephone interview on Wednesday, August 11, that the family cannot afford such a huge sum of money the abductors are demanding, “so they are discussing with the kidnappers.”

Matane opined that the kidnappers did not reach out to the state government, pointing out that “the government does not negotiate with bandits or kidnappers"; explaining that the government is working to ensure the commissioner regains his freedom but declined to state steps already being taken for "security reasons".

Meanwhile, Idris was kidnapped from his private residence in Babantunga town in the Tafa Local Government Area of the state at about 11pm on Sunday, August 8, by armed men and taken into captivity.

DailyPost reports that, a source said the abductors have relocated outside the shores of Niger State to an undisclosed location.

Adding that Sani Idris is the second high profile politician to fall into the trap of abductors within twenty-four hours in the state.

The report further indicates that independent investigation revealed, the kidnappers on Wednesday, August 11, called Idris family, assured them that the abductee was “in good health and was fine.”

Gunmen abduct APC chairman in Niger state, invade farmland

Earlier, suspected kidnappers abducted Mallam Aminu Bobi who served as the Zone ‘C’ chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Bobi was reportedly abducted on Saturday, August 7, around 5pm while supervising workers on his farmland in Mariga local government area.

According to reports by eyewitnesses, 18 gunmen in six motorcycles invaded the farm, shooting sporadically. It was gathered that they only took the APC chairman and left the workers behind.
