Abuja - Following the conduct of parallel ward congresses in the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party on Sunday, August 1, vowed to punish members who acted contrary to its directive.

Recall that the leadership of the APC had on Friday, July 30, read a Riot Act to all its chieftains in all the states across the country against the conduct of parallel congresses in the states.

Senator John Akpanudoedehe, the secretary of the APC caretaker committee, made the disclosure during an interview with The Punch in Abuja.

According to Akpanudoedehe, the APC, in line with Section 21(D) of its constitution, would punish members who flouted its directive and resorted to self-help.

While noting that the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led committee had zero tolerance to indiscipline, Akpanudoedehe warned that the party would impose sanctions on party members who organised parallel congresses.

Violence mar APC congresses

Earlier, the congresses organised by the ruling APC in some states across the country were marred by violence and protests by factional groups within the party.

Against the directive of the party leadership, parallel congresses were held in Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, and Imo.

The supporters of the Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun, and his predecessor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, reportedly produced two results in each of the 236 wards during the congresses.

APC congresses under Gov Buni remain a nullity

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) argued that any congress conducted by the APC under the Governor Buni-led national executive remains a nullity.

The national publicity secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the statement via the party’s official Facebook page on Sunday, August 1.

Ologbondiyan said by virtue of the constitution Buni cannot hold any executive position in the APC, while serving as a governor of a state.
