Bayelsa State: Court Sentences Kidnapper to Death by Firing Squad

A Bayelsa state high court, Ogbia judicial division, sitting in Yenagoa, has sentenced Charles Nikson to death by firing squad.

The 39-year-old man is to die for his involvement in the November 2020 failed kidnapping of Vivian Okoye, wife of a businessman and a medical practitioner identified as Alex Ogregade Ileimokumo, Daily Trust reports.

Nikson, who was the driver to the kidnapping gang, was arraigned before the Ogbia high court on the two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping.

He was arraigned at the court with another suspect, David Ekegima. Ekegima was discharged and acquitted.

The presiding judge, Justice Raphael Ajunwa, while delivering the judgement on the matter, found Charles Nikson guilty of the two charges, Tribune Newspaper added.

According to the judge, the law says anybody convicted of kidnapping either dies by hanging or firing squad.

Buhari orders crackdown on bandits, kidnappers

Legit.ng had reported that President Muhammadu Buhari promised not to sit and watch while bandits, kidnappers and their sponsors continue to cause mayhem. He, therefore, ordered the service chiefs and other security and intelligence coordinators of the nation to mark and take them out.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Major-General Babagana Monguno, disclosed this after a security meeting, chaired by the Nigerian president in the State House, Abuja.

The president also warned the security chiefs that a situation where criminals dictate the pace of security events in the country should be ended immediately, ordering them to be proactive.

Legit.ng had also reported that the most wanted bandit and kidnapper in Benue state, Cephas Shekere aka Azonto will now be without two of his houses in Makurdi, the state capital.

This follows the decision of the state government to demolish two buildings allegedly belonging to him at separate locations in Makurdi.

The state's law on anti-kidnapping prescribed among others, demolition of any property used as kidnappers den and haven for other violent crime activities in the state.
