Euro 2020: Holders Portugal Bow out After Defeat to Belgium in Last 16

Reigning Euros champions Portugal have been dumped out of the competition in the Round of 16 after suffering a 1-0 defeat in the hands of Belgium in a thrilling clash staged in Seville.

Despite being pooled in one of the toughest groups, Portugal managed to book a place in the Knockout round after securing a vital point against favourites France in their final group match.

However, their epic journey in the continental showpiece has been brought to a halt, with Thorgan Hazard's first-half wondrous strike booking the Red Devils a place in the quarter-finals.

The tie was pretty much balanced from the early exchanges, with neither side looking threatening in the final third.

Portugal had the first chance to break the deadlock in the 25th minute through Cristiano Ronaldo whose shot from the free-kick was calmly collected by Thibaut Courtois.

With just three minutes left on the clock before the break, Thorgan Hazard gave his side the lead with a thunderous finish, taking two quick touches before smashing a ferocious shot that swerved from Rui Patricio who was in goal for Portugal.

Fernando Santos went on to ring two changes shortly into the second half, introducing Bruno Fernandes and João Felix in place of Bernado Silva and João Moutinho.

However, the pair did little to nothing to change the outcome of the match, with their best chance of drawing level coming in the 83rd minute when Guerreiro rattling the post.

Despite Portugal's advances, Belgium held on to claim a vital win to earn a place in the last eight of the competition and will be taking on Italy who saw off Austria in their own fixture.

Italy through to last eight

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Czech Republic joined Italy and Denmark in the quarterfinals of this summer's Euro 2020 after dumping the Netherlands out of the competition on Sunday, June 27.

Two second-half goals from Tomas Holes and Patrik Schick sealed the victory for Jaroslav Silhavy's side at the Puskas Arena.

Frank de Boer's men were reduced to 10 men after Matthijs de Ligt was handed a straight red card in the 52nd minute - a move that gave their opponent the driving force to take the lead.
