Italy are through to the quarterfinal of the ongoing Euro 2020 championships following a 2-1 win over a determined Austrian side.
Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina grabbed a goal each in first half extra-time to ensure Sasa Kalajdzic's late strike was a formality as Italy go through to the last eight.
But it was a hard battle for the Italians who had to labour all through the encounter which was forced into extra-time.
The Italians came knocking as early as the 5th minute when Domenico Berardi combined well with Ciro Immobile, who almost got on the end of as Barella pass, but goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann rushed out to gather the ball.
And in the 19th minute, the Azzurri’s got the best chance of the match after Spinazzola did well on the left and cut his cross to the edge of the area where Barella's low strike was saved by the goalkeeper's foot.
At the other end, a long ball to Arnautovic found the tall striker and he let fly, but the ball went safely over.
And in the 32nd minute, a brilliant strike from Immobile smashed the crossbar with Austrian goalkeeper Bachmann rooted to the spot.
And the Italians probed again in the 43rd minute as Spinazzola once again got forward and had a strike turned round the post, then from the resulting corner Di Lorenzo headed wide.
The tempo however slowed in the second half and the 63rd minute saw a sloppy move from Italy who lose the ball in a dangerous area and Sabitzer unleashed from 20 yards out only for the ball to deflect off Bonucci's heel and go out for a corner.
After a goalless 90minutes, the game then went into extra-time as both teams continues to search for a winner.
And five minutes into the extra-time, Italy broke the deadlock after Chiesa brilliantly controlled on his chest before cutting onto his left. Italy 1-0 Austria.
It was two nil on the stroke of first half extra-time as Pessina scored for Italy after a good play from on the left and he found Belotti in the penalty area, the ball fell to Pessina who rifled home. Italy 2-0 Austria.
Sasa Kalajdzic pulled one back for the Austrians in the 114th minute, but the Italians already did the damage to win 2-1 on the night.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that two goals by Kasper Dolberg and late strikes by Joakim Maehle and Martin Braithwaite against Wales on Saturday, June 26, were all Denmark needed to reach the quarterfinal of the ongoing Euro 2020 championships, GOAL reports.
The highly anticipated encounter lived up to its pre-match razzmatazz, but the Danish side looked the better side all through the game and won the tie 4-0.
