Emmanuel Macron: Commotion As Angry Man Slaps French President in the Face

Drome region, France - A man in a crowd of onlookers slapped French President Emmanuel Macron in the face on Tuesday, June 8.

France 24.com reported that the incident occurred on a walkabout in Southern France.

Images on social media showed Macron approach a barrier to greet a man who, instead of shaking hands, slapped the 43-year-old across the face.

Macron’s security entourage quickly intervened to pull the man to the ground and moved Macron away from him.

Reuters, citing BFM TV and RMC radio, reported that two people were arrested over the assault on the president.

The publication stated that the man was heard shouting out "Down with Macronia" ("A Bas La Macronie") before he slapped the Fresch president in the face.

According to The New Indian Express, the attack on the president took place in the village of Tain-l'Hermitage in the Drome region.

Macron was on a visit to the Drome region in southeastern France, where he met restaurateurs and students to talk about returning to a normal life after the COVID-19 epidemic.

The identity of the man who slapped Macron, and his motives, were unclear at the time of compiling this report.

Meanwhile, Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s former president, was found guilty of corruption charges. He was sentenced to three years in jail, with two years suspended.

The court found him guilty of trying to bribe a judge and of influence-peddling. He was reported to have forged a “corruption pact” with his lawyer and a senior magistrate.

According to The Guardian Sarkozy instructed his lawyer, Thierry Herzog, to offer a cushy job to a magistrate in return for information.

However, the former president will likely not spend a day in jail. The news outlet claimed that the one-year prison sentence can be served with some conditions.
