Oyo Boils As Suspected Herdsmen Invade Igangan, Burn King’s Palace, 10 Killed

- While residents of Igangan in Ibarapa North LGA of Oyo state slept, daredevil bandits stormed the town, unleashing terror

- At least five residents were killed by the suspected herdsmen while five of the assailants met their death during a gun battle with security operatives

- Governor Makinde said the situation has been brought under control as he pleaded for calm among residents

Oyo state - A late night / early morning attack by bandits in Igangan, Ibarapa North local government area of Oyo state left no fewer than 10 persons dead.

According to TVC report, the hoodlums suspected to be herdsmen arrived in large numbers late Saturday night, June 5, and unleased mayhem in the community.

Although the total number of fatalities has not yet been determined, it was learnt that no fewer than 10 persons lost their lives during the attack.

Five residents were reportedly shot dead by the attackers while security operatives who were said to have rushed to the town also killed five of the attackers during the gun battle.

The daredevil criminals reportedly set ablaze the Asigangan’s palace, a gas station, a truck loaded with cassava flour and some cars.

Speaking to The Punch, the secretary of Farmers’ Union, Mr. Taiwo Adeagbo who is popularly known as Akowe Agbe said:

"At last, notorious terrorist herdsmen are now waging war against lgangan. The situation is a very serious one."

Oyo governor asks for calm

The governor of Oyo state, Seyi Makinde, has described the attack on residents of Igangan as a very shocking one.

In a message sahred on Facebook, the governor called on residents to remain calm.

Part of his message read:

"I am currently being briefed on the incidents. I urge residents to remain calm as security operatives are now in control of the situation."

Nigerians who reacted to the government's statement asked him to step up in the area of security.

Ogundepo Olufisayo Simon commented:

"Your achievements in infrastructure and welfare is laudable, however you need to be more active in the area of security. A government should be proactive and not reactive especially in the area of security as that’s one of the main responsibilities of government.
"Security operatives shouldn’t be in control of situations when the deed has been done. May God comfort the grieving families."

Badmus Yakub stated:

"Mr Governor can not handle security issue in the state unlike the immediate past Government .He might have been good in every sectors but on security ,i guarantee anyone that he is not fit. Truth must be told."

Foreign herdsmen have invaded southwest forests

This attack is coming less than three days after Gen. Kunle Togun (retd), the chairman of the Oyo State Security Network, aka Amotekun, raised an alarm over the invasion of southwest forests by foreign herdsmen.

Speaking on Wednesday, June 2, he advised residents in the six southwest states to be vigilant, noting that the herdsmen might launch attacks on the region.

Togun said the foreign herdsmen believed God has given them Nigeria, especially, the southwest, as their inheritance.

According to him, Amotekun cannot address the crisis alone and urged members of the public to help with credible information.
