Former Arsenal star William Gallas has faulted the Emirates' club for appointing Mikel Arteta as a manager in December 2019.

Arteta was named Gunners boss as a replacement for Unai Emery who had been sacked at the time.

The former midfielder had impressed as Pep Guardiola's assistant at Man City to convince Arsenal hierarchy he was the right man for the job.

Whereas he had a bright start in his early months at the Emirates when he won the FA Cup and the Community Shield, the Spaniard failed to replicate his exploits during the 2020/21 campaign.

The north Londoners endured a miserable season as they finished eighth in the Premier League to miss out on a European football slot.

Gallas has now suggested Arteta was not ready to manage a top club and it was a mistake to have him at the helm. Gallas, who spent four years with the Gunners, told The Sun.

"Mikel Arteta was not ready yet to manage a club like Arsenal."

However, the Frenchman was quick to tip Arteta for greatness, but only after he earns enough experience to afford him success at the top level. He added:

"OK, he was an assistant coach at Manchester City. But he had never managed a team. It is completely different.
"The board made a mistake picking him. I’m sure he will be a great manager but you need to have the experience to manage a big club."

Arteta will be under immense pressure to make amends ahead of the 2021/22 season and will be desperate to post impressive results lest he faces the sack.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the Arsenal boss has admitted that David Luiz's proposed departure from the club at the end of the season is inevitable.

The Brazilian center-back's contract will expire when the Gunners play their final Premier League game of the season against Brighton at the Emirates.

Luiz joined the north London club from Chelsea in the 2019-20 season and had his contracted extended during the lockdown periods.
