Man United were strong favourites to clinch the trophy against a side whose town in Spain only has a population of 51,000.

Solskjaer was looking for his first piece of silverware but, against the odds, it was Villarreal who took the lead in the first half, leaving the Red Devils with the usual job of coming from behind for a win.

In all honesty, it was a game devoid of quality as only three shots on target were recorded throughout 120 minutes.

Edinson Cavani restored parity for United, forcing the game to extra time and eventually penalties.

The shootout needed all 22 players to take the spot kick, with De Gea missing the decisive kick in a sudden-death situation.

It was a thoroughly disappointing end to the game for Bruno Fernandes, who has been in scintillating form for Manchester United once again this season.

Videos of the Portuguese star have since emerged online showing the 26-year old being consoled by teammates with tears in his eyes.

It goes without saying that he really wanted to win his first piece of silverware as a Manchester United player, but it was not meant to be.

Fernandes took the third spot-kick in the shootout and typically found the back of the net, but on his overall performance on the night, he was fairly quiet.

Despite United scoring their first 10 spot-kicks, there were faced with the challenge of Villarreal players being equally as prolific from the penalty spot.

Man United’s penalty shootout woes

If recent history and stats were anything to go by, United stood little chance in the penalty shootout against Villarreal.

As a matter of fact, the Red Devils have lost six of their last seven penalty shootouts in all competitions with their only win coming against Rochdale in the League Cup in September 2019 in that time.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Man United icon Paul Scholes has singled out David de Gea for blame following Man United's Europa League final defeat against Villarreal.

Scholes cited De Gea's disappointing performance in the shootouts in particular, with the legendary midfielder contending the keeper should have done more.

Both Villarreal and United played out a 1-1 draw in Gdansk, Poland, after regulation time, with neither side finding a winner even after 30 minutes of extra time.

The encounter had to be decided via an epic penalty shootout which saw all outfield players convert their spot-kicks.

Geronimo Rulli was the hero for Villarreal after saving his fellow goalkeeper David De Gea's spot-kick to put an end to the marathon between the two sides.
