Dark Day: COAS Attahiru's Death Draws Strong Words from Atiku, Shehu Sani, Lawan, others

Prominent Nigerians have described the death of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Ibrahim Attahiru, which occurred on Friday, May 21, as a national tragedy.
A former Nigerian vice president, Atiku Abubakar, on Friday referred to Attahiru's death as constituting a dark day for the entire nation.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said the tragedy sent a rude shock to Nigerians and all its allies across the world.
Atiku commiserated with President Muhammadu Buhari as the Commander-in-Chief of the nation's armed forces and the bereaved families of the deceased military officers.
"It is a dark day for the nation. The loss of COAS Major Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru and others today sends a rude shock across Nigeria and our friends worldwide.
"I sympathise with the Commander-in-Chief and our armed forces on this sad development. May the Attahiru family and other affected families be comforted, and their memories be a blessing."
On his part, the outspoken former senator from Kaduna, Shehu Sani, has described what happened as a national tragedy.

"The death of the Chief of Army Staff Attahiru Ibrahim and others in a plane crash is a national tragedy. May their souls rest in peace. My deepest condolences to @HQNigerianArmy, their families, and the nation."
Also, the minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, was saddened by the sudden demise of COAS alongside other military personnel.
"Saddened by the passing of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru and others. May their souls rest in perfect peace, may God console their families, friends, colleagues and all who mourn them."
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, pointed out that the development caused pain to him, noting that late Attahiru was on an official trip when he lost his life.
"It is with deep sadness that I received the news of the tragic death of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru, and other military officers killed in an air crash on Friday while on an official trip to Kaduna."
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters had opened up on the cause of the plane crash that resulted in the death of Attahiru and 10 other officers on Friday.
According to Onyema Nwachukwu, defence spokesman, although the incident is still being investigated, the crash occurred after the aircraft landed at the Kaduna International Airport.
