The governor of Plateau, Simon Lalong, has described the act of tagging particular tribes in Nigeria as being criminal in nature as divisive and detrimental to national growth.

Governor Lalong in a statement issued by Makut Macham, his director of press and public affairs, on Wednesday, May 19, noted that for peace and unity to reign, the trend of profiling of criminals along ethnic, religious, and political lines must be eschewed, The Nation reports.

His words:

“We have to put humanity above any other consideration because when we judge people by their ethnicity, religion or other leanings, we miss their potentials because profiling influences the marginalisation of people without reason.
“For instance, we have to treat crime as crime and isolate criminals rather than covering their actions by where they come from or their religion. This further creates disunity and division.”

Meanwhile, a group, Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF) had raised the alarm about an alleged plot by some elements posing as agitators for Yoruba freedom, secession, and self-determination to cause fresh violence and chaos in the southwest region of the country.
