Video, Photos Emerge As Attackers Burn Down Two INEC Offices in Southeast

Suspected arsonists have set ablaze two offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ebonyi state.

The electoral commission disclosed in a tweet that the offices were attacked on Tuesday, May 18, by unidentified persons.
According to INEC, the affected offices are located in Ebonyi and Ezza North local government areas of the state.
A video shared by the commission showed that fire caused major damage to both facilities.
Meanwhile, INEC is set to take a bold step to stop the attacks on its offices in parts of the country. The commission has planned a meeting with heads of security agencies to address the issue.
In other news, the electoral umpire has given a scary verdict concerning the 2023 general election.
It said preparation for the coming general election will be negatively affected if attacks on its facilities continue.
This was disclosed by Festus Okoye, INEC’s spokesperson, during an interview with Channels Television.

He stated that as a result of the attack, many sensitive and non-sensitive materials, including generators and card readers have been lost.
Meanwhile, Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, has urged Nigerians to allow free, fair and credible elections in 2023.
Vanguard exclusively reports that Laing, however, said the United Kingdom (UK) would deny visas to Nigerians who disrupt the 2023 elections.
Laing, who made this known on Tuesday, May 18, in Port Harcourt on her maiden visit to Rivers state, cautioned Governor Nyesom Wike and minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, to cement their legacies on a positive note by ensuring peaceful 2023 elections in the state.
To news on security, the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali has launched a new security operation to check the separatist agenda of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the southeast zone.
Alkali told journalists on Tuesday, May 18, that the operation codenamed, Operation Restore Peace (Operation RP) was customized to bring back the cherished peace that the southeast was known for.
He made the disclosure at the launch of Operation RP at the Okpara Square in Enugu in the company of the southeast governors led by Enugu state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
