Presidency Celebrates As Ghana Govt Follows Nigeria, Launches SIM Card Registration

The presidency has reacted to the recent announcement made by Ghana's vice president on SIM card registration.

According to Lauretta Onochie, a presidential aide, Nigeria has set the pace for others to follow. She disclosed this on her Twitter page when she wrote:
"Vice President of Ghana speaks. Ghana set to link SIM cards too. Where Nigeria leads, others follow. God bless Nigeria. God bless Africa."
However, some Nigerians have reacted to the news with some social media users throwing shades at Ghana.

"Ahh, finally at least, the truth is coming out that this Nigeria is still ahead in thinking through the best way to go for Africa. Ghana be like Lagos alone in population size with less Wahala to deal with, wonder if you will envy them if they plenti reach Lagos and Kano togeda?"
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that network providers in Nigeria lost about N1.1 billion to the ban on SIM card registration which fell between December 2020 and April this year. During the same period, the telcos had lost over 11 million subscribers.
In an estimated calculation, it was discovered that for about 10 months of last year, MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and 9mobile jointly recorded about 2.32 million subscribers.
The addition of the estimated subscribers with the cost of a sim card, which is N100, showed the telecoms lost about N1.1 billion during the over three months ban on SIM card registration.
In another report, the federal government lifted the suspension on replacement and activation of old SIM cards.
Legit.ng reported that the directive was given on Thursday, December 31, 2020, in a statement by the director of public affairs of the National Communication Commission (NCC) Ikechukwu Adinde.
Speaking on the development, Adinde disclosed that the action became necessary in line with the federal government’s desire to consolidate the achievement of the SIM card registration.
