Terrorism: Nigeria is now at War, Gbajabiamila Opens up

- There is no denying that Nigeria is dealing with serious security issues

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Monday, May 17, admitted that Nigeria is at war with terrorists and insurgents.

The Cable said Gbajabiamila made this submission during a public to deliberate on a bill seeking to set up a trust fund for the military.

He noted that Nigeria needs a better and trained military in other to sustain impressive victory over insurgency and banditry.

The speaker of the green chamber made it clear that at such a time the country needs funds beyond regular appropriation.

Speaking further, he revealed that only nine percent of the total budgetary allocation to the Nigerian Armed Forces is spent on equipment, Guardian reports.

The lawmaker stated:

“Nigeria is at war against insurgency, terrorism, kidnapping, and all manner of insecurity; hence the need to uplift the resources available to our armed services to enable them procures the best tools to help win this war. So, what we seek to do in this Bill is not new or unique to us as a nation."

Meanwhile, Tukur Buratai, a former chief of army staff, had reacted to allegations that about $1bn could not be accounted for under his tenure as a service chief.

Buratai, who spoke through his lawyer Osuagwu Ugochukwu on Friday, March 12, denied any wrongdoing.

News reports on Friday had quoted the National Security Adviser (NSA) Babagana Monguno as saying during an interview that some military funds were unaccounted for after new service chiefs came in.

Buratai also denied being mentioned in connection with the alleged missing funds just as he noted that the National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno has already denied.

A statement from Osuagwu read in part:

“I can confirm that Lt. General Buratai and other ex-service chiefs were never mentioned in the interview and neither was any arms fund missing under the stewardship of Lt. Gen T.Y. Buratai."
