Nigerian Govt Reveals Its Position on Israel-Palestine Conflict, Sends Strong Message to Both Parties

- The Nigerian government has said it is observing the unfolding developments in Israel and Palestine

Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, May 13, said the country was observing the conflict between Israeli and Palestine forces with “great concern.”

Legit.ng reports that the Nigerian government urged both parties to "see reason and deescalate the hostilities," a statement released by the ministry said.

The statement posted on the ministry's official Twitter page reads partly:

“The Nigerian Government further urges the two parties to remain committed to the two-state solution and, in the meantime, guarantee the rights of all citizens to live in peace and dignity.”

Since Monday, May 10, Israeli and Palestinian forces have involved in a deadly clash, resulting in the deaths of at least 84 people have been killed, including 17 children, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

According to Al Jazeera, the latest conflict was triggered by the looming evictions of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of East Jerusalem.

The development to unrest at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, which is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

On Thursday, May 13, Israel deployed additional troops to Gaza’s border as the military conflict with Palestinian Islamists raged on, while inside Israel security forces scrambled to contain deadly riots between Jews and Arabs.

Meanwhile, when the Israel-Palestine also got deadlier nearly two years ago, the Nigerian government had released a similar statement.

In the statement, the federal government condemned Israel’s deadly response to clashes along the border with the Gaza Strip, in which 58 unarmed Palestinian demonstrators were killed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the federal government’s concern over the killings, stating:

”The Israeli government must stop such use of excessive force against unarmed civilians, including children, and respect the basic human rights of Palestinians as well as international law.”
