Food Security: Buhari Vows to Take Action Against Bandits

- President Buhari has admitted that the activities of bandits in the country are posing a threat to the availability of food

- In light of this, the president on Thursday, May 13, declared that his government will not allow criminals to keep threatening the lives of farmers

- Buhari noted that the federal government is poised to do its utmost to make sure banditry and kidnapping become history very soon

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised Nigerians that his administration will employ all resources and manpower to deal with bandits whose activities are threatening the nation's food security.

Nigeria's leader made this vow when speaking with State House correspondents in Abuja after observing the Eid-el-Fitr prayers.

President Buhari stated:

“The law enforcement agencies are working hard to regain confidence against bandits so that we can go back to the land. This is very important."

The president noted that the ugly trend set in motion by the criminals will be duly addressed to ensure that farmers return to their lands for the cultivation of food crops that will be enough for all and even to export to other nations.

As he called on Nigerians, especially the elite, to understand the military and the problems at hand, Buhari commended the support of the National Assembly in dealing with the menace.

His words:

“The National Assembly is cooperating very well. Within the resources available, they are certainly giving us priority on our (military) requests.

Earlier, in his message for the year 2021 Eid-el-Fitr celebration, President Buhari called for prayers against kidnapping and banditry in the country.

Buhari in the message called for unity and solidarity among all Nigerians.

He said:

“On this blessed occasion, I wish that the Eid festival brings with it peace, safety, security, brotherhood and love amongst all.
“Unity and solidarity among all citizens, Muslims and Christians are imperative especially at a time when our country is faced with multiple challenges which are surmountable only when we come together as one.
“It is important that we remember how we share, through our faiths, common bonds that should serve to unite us and not allow ourselves to succumb to those who seek to divide us, using our two great religions, for their own selfish advantages."
