Manchester City star Aymeric Laporte is set to switch his nationality from France to Spain just before the forthcoming European Championship, SI.com reports.

Fresh information say the defender was not named in Didier Deschamps' national team squad despite his impressive display for the Citizens in the Premier League this season.

Laporte has been vital since his days with Atletico Madrid and now, he is part of the City team that will win the Premier League this season.

The 26-year-old is visibly frustrated that he was left out of the team and with a direct request from the Spanish national team manager, there is a growing expectation that Laporte will have a switch confirmed from France to Spain.

It was gathered Aymeric Laporte received a 'direct request' from Spain manager Luis Enrique to make the switch - and subject to FIFA approval - will be playing in the nation's colours come next month’s tournament.

The defender, who was born in France but is of Spanish descendants, spent six years playing for Athletic Bilbao before making the move to Manchester City in the January of 2018 - playing an integral part in securing their first Premier League crown under Pep Guardiola.

Meanwhile, Karim Benzema should return to the national team according to former Arsenal boss Arsenal Wenger.

The Real Madrid star has been exiled from Leu Bleus since 2015 following the scandal involving Benzema and former teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

Wenger is now appealing for the in-form striker to be called back into the Didier Deschamps squad ahead of the European championships slated for 2020.

The ex-Gunners handler claimed that the player should not be judged by his past sins but for his current club form for Los Blancos.

Legit.ng earlier reported that tears got the better of AC Milan ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic as he made a return to the Sweden national football team for the first time in five years.

Ibrahimovic announced his retirement from international football after Euro 2016 and looked to have played his last match for his country.

However, he earned a recall to the squad for the World Cup qualifiers this week, thanks to his sparkling form with Milan.
