Gov Emmanuel Condemns Attacks on Security Personnel in Akwa Ibom

- The spate of attacks on police stations and personnel in some parts of the country was witnessed in Akwa Ibom recently

- Governor Udom Emmanuel has, however, vowed to ensure the attacks are not recorded again in the state

- The governor said his administration will deploy all available resources at its disposal to address the issue

Akwa Ibom governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has condemned the attacks on security assets within the state, promising to ensure that his administration deploys all available resources at its disposal towards ensuring that normalcy returns soon.

The governor made the comment on Monday, May 10 during the meeting of the Executive Council of the Akwa Ibom government held at the executive council chambers in Government House, Uyo, the state capital.

Governor Emmanuel also promised to ensure that the rise in sexual and gender-based violence is tackled.

In his avowed determination to match words with action, the governor ordered the upgrading of the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response unit in the state ministry of justice to a full department.

The department will among other things collaborate with the ministries of women affairs and health and other critical agencies towards ensuring an inter-agency collaboration that will ensure that rape and other related crimes are tackled effectively in the state.

A statement signed by the commissioner for information and strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong, and seen by Legit.ng, noted that the directive of the governor will be carried out immediately.

The commissioner also announced that a media interaction between the governor and the media will hold on Friday, May 14 where the Akwa Ibom state executive is expected to address major issues concerning his domain.

Recall that a divisional police headquarters in Odoro Ikpe in Ini local government area of the Akwa-Ibom state was recently attacked by gunmen.

Five police officers including the wife of another personnel were killed during the attack by the armed men.

Facilities, vehicles, and other valuables in the building were also reportedly destroyed by the gunmen according to police authorities.

Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Ibrahim Idris Kpotun, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), said the attacks on policemen and police stations have worsened the security crisis in Nigeria.

The former IGP said there is a need to study the attack on policemen, adding that the new trend is very dangerous.
