Cross River State Govt to Use Drones to Deliver COVID-19 Vaccines, Other Medical Supplies

The Cross River state government and Zipline, the world’s first and only national scale drone delivery service, have announced a partnership.

The initiative will witness the use of a logistics network of autonomous delivery drones to help transform access and availability of routine and emergency medicine for millions of people in the state.

The new service will use drones to make on-demand deliveries of hundreds of different vaccines, blood products, and life-saving medications.

Legit.ng gathered that the partnership was made possible by the governor of Cross River state; Professor Benedict Ayade, commissioner for health; Dr. Betta Edu and the director-general of the state primary health care agency. Dr. Janet Ekpenyong.

Dr. Linda Ayade, wife of the governor and accomplished medical practitioner was said to have also played a major role in the partnership.

A statement sent to Legit.ng quoted the governor as saying:

“The focus of this partnership is to ensure that all barriers hindering the successful delivery of medical commodities to our people is removed.
“This is one of the many forward-thinking interventions we are implementing to consolidate the gains we have made within the health care system.”

On her part, Dr. Edu said:

“We anticipate that this revolutionary technology will improve access and even distribution of medical commodities to remote and hard-to-reach areas, which has only become more urgent with the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Daniel Marfo, Senior Vice President of Africa at Zipline said:

“We are on a mission to transform health care systems around the world, and we’re thrilled to partner with Cross River state as they invest in innovation to improve the health of their people.”

Legit.ng had earlier reported on a similar partnership between the Kaduna state government and Zipline.

Each of the three planned Zipline distribution centers in Kaduna state will cover a delivery area of more than 20,000 km2 and will collectively be capable of delivering to more than 1,000 health facilities serving millions of people.
