Finance Minister Says FG Will Cut Workers Salary to Reduce Cost

- Zainab Ahmed said the Federal Government is planning to reduce workers salary this year

- The finance minister said President Muhammadu Buhari want to reduce cost of governance

- The country is having revenue problem, as majority is spent for expenditure and to service debt

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, said President Muhammadu Buhari plans to cut workers' salary in order to reduce cost of governance which has become a burden on the government's revenue.

During an event organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission in Abuja on Tuesday, Ahmed said salaries of civil servants will be reviewed.

The finance minister said President BuharI has tasked the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to review the salaries of federal agencies as well.

She said this is important amid declining revenue which is mostly used to service debt. It was revealed that revenue continues to fall below government expenditure.

Part of the cut in government expenditure will include merging of agencies and doing away with unnecessary spending Ahmed said:

“We still see government expenditure increase to a terrain twice higher than our revenue.
"The nation’s budgets are filled every year with projects that are recycled over and over again and are also not necessary.
“Mr President has directed that the salaries committee that I chair, work together with the Head of Service and other members of the committee to review the government payrolls in terms of stepping down on cost."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that WhatsApp has warned users will be restricted from using some of its services if new update is not accepted.

WhatsApp stated that it has updated the messaging app's terms of service and privacy policy, and users must accept the update by May 15 this year in order to avoid restrictions.

The users that fail to update their WhatsApp terms and privacy will not be able to read or send messages, as they will only be allowed to receive notifications.
