Tears As Former Premier League Midfielder Dies at 54 After Battling Cancer

Former Premier League star Alan McLoughlin has been reported dead at the age of 54 after battling cancer.

The former Manchester United midfielder was said to have undergone surgery earlier this year to remove a from his vertebrae.

Reports reveal that he had previously removed a tumour from his kidney in 2012 but the cancer was not totally taken care of as he opened up a few months back that the illness had returned in 2019 as he underwent immunotherapy.

The 54-year-old was best remembered in Ireland for his goal against Northern Ireland that sent the Boys in Green to the 1994 World Cup according to SunSport.

He played for the national team for nine years and won 42 caps in the process having been a late addition to the squad for Italia 90.

Tributes have however started trooping in after the confirmation of the former midfield general's untimely death on Tuesday, May 2.

League One side McLoughin are among the first to pay their last respect to their former player, saying:

"Pompey are sad to confirm that Alan McLoughlin has passed away at the age of just 54. Rest in peace, Macca."

Meanwhile, Swindon tweeted:

"We are incredibly saddened to learn that Alan McLoughlin has passed away aged 54. Rest in peace, Macca."

And Southampton posted:

"Saints FC is saddened to learn of the passing of former midfielder Alan McLoughlin, aged 54. Our thoughts are with Alan's family and loved ones."

Legit.ng earlier reported that Gonzalo Higuain's family has been thrown into mourning following the announcement of the death of their dear mother at age 64.

The striker's mum, Nancy Zacarias, was confirmed dead earlier this week after losing a long time battle to cancer.

Reports claim the striker's mother was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness in 2016 and she went for surgery the same year.
