Tension in Southeast as Gunmen Again Attack Police Station, Kill Officer

A report by Channels TV indicates that gunmen have attacked the Abaomege police station in Onicha local government area of Ebonyi state.

According to the report, Stanley Emegha, the commissioner for internal security, border peace, and conflict resolution, confirmed the attack on Sunday, May 2.

It was gathered that the assailants attacked the facility on Saturday, May 1, shooting sporadically, but were unable to gain full access to the station.

Following the attack, sophisticated arms were reportedly carted away by the gunmen while they killed an officer on duty.

The commissioner said a policeman who sustained injuries is currently receiving treatment at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.

In another report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), an eyewitness and resident in the area, Sunday Okafor, said the incident occurred on Saturday night.

Okafor speaking to the news publication claimed that the gunmen also destroyed police vehicles and a motorcycle at the division and stole some property.

Recall that gunmen attacked the Ekori police station in Yakurr local government area of Cross Rivers state.

The attack has been confirmed by a spokesman of the Cross River state police command, Igri Ewa.

Ewa was said to have told journalists in the state capital, Calabar on Monday, April 12 that the attackers, suspected to be cultists, invaded the police station, but assured that investigation has commenced on the issue.

It was learned that the attack led to the closure of the station indefinitely and officers asked to move to another station at the local government headquarters.

Meanwhile, another attack on police and military checkpoints has been recorded again in Nigeria.

This time, gunmen have attacked the checkpoints along the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road in Ikwerre local government area, Rivers state.

Gunmen launched the attacks around 8 pm on Saturday, April 24. Four policemen and two soldiers were killed in the attack.
