The Gunners came into the match off a disappointing 2-1 Europa League defeat in the hands of Villarreal.

The north Londoners failed to put their best foot forward during their trip to Spain, with Mikel Arteta's men falling to the La Liga side in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie.

However, the side put their European frustrations behind them to stage a stunning performance against the Magpies in what was a warm up display ahead of their second leg meeting with Villarreal.

A largely dominant Arsenal did not take long to take the lead at St. James Park, with Mohamed Elneny scoring the opener inside just five minutes.

The Egyptian midfielder did enough to half-volley the ball in at the near post to make it 1-0, with David Luiz playing a central role in the build-up.

Mathew Ryan was forced into a brilliant save in the 18th minute by Saint-Maximin, tipping the ball over the bar to deny the Newcastle star what would have been the home side's equliser.

Granit Xhaka nearly doubled his side's advantage 10 minutes later with a ferocious 20-yarder, but Dubravka was up to the task to fend off the threat.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang went on to make it 2-0 in the 66th minute, thumping the ball in from five yards from Gabriel Martinelli's cracking cross.

The tie eventually finished 2-0, with things going from bad to worse for the hosts after Fabian Schar was red-carded at stoppage time for a rash challenge on Marinelli.

The result leaves Arsenal in ninth, and now shift their focus to the upcoming Europa League second leg meeting with Villarreal.

The Europa League represents the London side's only realistic chance to play in the Champions League next season.
