Gunmen Kill 2 Police Officers, Raze 5 Vehicles in Fresh Attack in Akwa Ibom

- The police force Akwa Ibom state has once again been thrown into mourning following the death of two of its men

- The security officials met their unfortunate death in the hands of gunmen who stormed a police station in Ikono LGA

- According to a statement released by the council chairman, members of IPOB’s Eastern Security Network were suspected to be behind the attack

Unknown gunmen have struck once again, killing two police officers in Akwa Ibom state. A female police officer also suffered injuries during the attack on a police facility at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo in Ikono local government area of the state on Saturday, May 1.

The chairman of Ikono council, Nyakno Okoibu, in a statement disclosed that the criminals set ablaze five vehicles parked at the station’s premises, Premium Times reports.

The statement which was released by the chairman’s media aide, Nsisong Ntuk, disclosed that the attack occurred at about 3 a.m. on Saturday.

According to the chairman, there are suspicions that the attack was carried out by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the security arm of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Okoibu assured the people of the state that Governor Udom Emmanuel will not sit and watch while things get worse and will ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and made to pay for their crimes.

He also appealed to the people to provide the police with any useful information they have about the attack.

The Punch reports that the police spokesman, Odiko Macdon, confirmed the incident. According to him, the situation is being assessed by the policemen mobilised to the scene.

As both the federal and state governments battle with the issue of insecurity across the nation, not only are innocent citizens losing their lives, security agencies are also getting their own share of violence.

This latest attack is coming a few days after some gunmen shot dead two policemen and razed their patrol vehicle in Ika LGA of Akwa Ibom state.

Their rifles were also carted away during the attack on Wednesday, April 28.
