Gunmen suspected to be armed herdsmen reportedly killed a man and his wife at Udei branch in Mbabai ward, Guma local government area of Benue state.

Daily Trust reported that the man identified as Igba Faga and his wife were on Tuesday evening, April 27, macheted to death while returning from their farm on a motorbike.

The special adviser on security to the Benue state governor, Col. Paul Hemba (rtd), told newsmen in Makurdi on Wednesday, April 28, that suspected armed herders had laid ambush on the couple and hacked them to death on their way home from the farm, The Punch also reported.

Hemba said that the deceased rode on their own motorcycle when the attackers pounced on them, killing both on the spot.

He added that the bodies of the deceased had been evacuated by their family members for burial.

In a related development, unknown gunmen on Tuesday, April 27, invaded a camp for internally displaced people in Abagena, along Makurdi-Lafia highway in Benue state, and killed six people.

The attack also left many people injured just as residents of the camp for the displaced people fled in droves.

In his reaction, Governor Samuel Ortom said the camp was attacked by suspected herdsmen, adding that the attack led to the death of seven people, not six.

In a separate report, Governor Ortom said the federal government was insensitive to the rising cases of killings in the country and urged it to seek external support to quell the challenge.

He said that with the killings occurring daily and with heavy casualties, it has become very obvious that the Buhari-led government has been overwhelmed by the unfortunate situation.

Governor Ortom made the comment while inaugurating Army Day Secondary School, Effurun in Delta state on the invitation of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
