Insecurity: Buhari Finally Bows to Pressure, Seeks America’s Help to Tackle Insurgency

After hues and cries by Nigerians over incessant kidnappings and killings in many states of the country, President Muhammadu Buhari has finally agreed to seek foreign help in tackling the menace.

The Nation reports that the president on Tuesday, April 27, sought the assistance of the international community to curb insecurity in West African nations.

Legit.ng gathered that Buhari specifically requested the United States (U.S) to relocate its Africa Command (AFRICOM) headquarters from Stuttgart in Germany to its theatre of operation, which is Africa.

According to the report, the president made the plea during a virtual meeting with U.S Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken.

It added that the United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 27, assured that it would remain a strong ally of Nigeria in its efforts to contain terrorism.

The special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, in a statement said that Buhari told Blinken that insecurity in Nigeria has largely been worsened by complex negative pressures in the Sahel, Central and West Africa, as well as the Lake Chad region.

Buhari noted:

“Compounded as the situation remains, Nigeria and her security forces remain resolutely committed to containing them and addressing their root causes."

The Guardian reports that Buhari added that Nigeria would enhance collaborations in all forms with its strategic partners for greater security for all.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that some governors and senators expressed great concerns about the high rate of kidnapping and killings in Nigeria.

It was reported that the prominent Nigerians on Tuesday, April 27, asked President Buhari to seek foreign help in order to end insecurity in the country.

The lawmakers while debating a motion on activities of Boko Haram in Niger state, described insecurity in the country as not only terrible but also shameful.

In a related report, a lawmaker representing Niger East at the Senate, Mohammed Sani Musa, said that the red chamber would not consider a motion seeking the impeachment of President Buhari.

It was reported that while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, April 27, Musa said impeachment is another “crisis” that the country does not need.

Musa was reacting to a question on why lawmakers have not made a move to remove Buhari from office over the worsening security situation of Nigeria.
