Real Madrid had to fight back to salvage a draw for themselves against Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final meeting at Angelo Di Stefano Stadium.

The Blues who have enjoyed stability under Thomas Tuchel got the game started on a bright note with Christian Pulisic scoring the opener in the 14th minute.

However, his early goal was cancelled by Karim Benzema's lovely effort one minute before the half-hour mark on Tuesday night, April 27, encounter.

The tie saw Thomas Tuchel retain the same squad that secured a 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham United at the weekend.

N'Golo Kante and Jorginho started in the midfield in the absence of Mateo Kovacic, with Cesar Azpilicueta and the experienced Thiago Silva making the cut at the heart of defence.

This was the fourth meeting between the two teams and Chelsea were desperate to cement their dominance over Real as they are yet to suffer defeat in the hands of the La Liga giants.

And the Premier League side did enough to maintain the status as they battled Zinedine Zidane's men to a cagey draw.

The EPL outfit showed plenty of ambition in the opening exchanges, with Timo Werner and Pulisic nearly combining for an opener in the fifth minute.

Their efforts eventually paid off in the 14th minute, with Pulisic breaking the deadlock after he darted between two defenders before drawing Thibaut Courtois out to unleash a powerful shot that made it 1-0.

However, the lead was short-lived as Benzema drew the hosts level in the 29th minute, with the Frenchman thrashing the ball into the net after using his head to tee up himself.

The tie saw Eden Hazard make a bow against his former side in the second half and should have done more to get Real the winner in the 86th minute before Antonio Rudiger intercepted his cross.

The two teams went on to settle for a 1-1 draw, with Chelsea claiming an important away goal which they will carry into the second leg to be played in England.

Whoever emerges victorious on goal aggregate will face the winner between Man City and Paris Saint-Germain in the finals to be played in Istanbul.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has backed Paris Saint-Germain to win the Champions League title this season.

Should the French giants go all the way and lift the European trophy, it would be the first time in their history to do that.

However, they will have to contend with a two-legged semi-final fixture with Man City on their way to the finals where they will face the winner between Chelsea and Real Madrid.
