Sheikh Gumi Opens Up on the Outcome of His Negotiation with Bandits

- Sheikh Gumi has spoken on the results of his previous talks with the bandits terrorising the northern part of the country

- The Islamic scholar said the bandits he met with are no longer involved in kidnapping

- Gumi, however, lamented that the authorities stalled his peace talks with the criminal bandits

Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, has again called on the Nigerian government to grant amnesty to the armed bandits wreaking havoc across northern Nigeria.

Sheikh Gumi who was recently at the forefront of the negotiations with bandits said those he met in the past have repented.

The Islamic scholar made this known in an interview with Roots TV published on YouTube.

His words:

“All those we met, all of them have stopped being involved in this kidnapping. The ones doing it now are rogue ones who we did not sit down with."

Sheikh Gumi added that the process of “sitting down with” other bandits was stalled by “authorities” who do not want it.

He said:

“Our processes were arrested and stopped by the Authority, which is not interested in it."

When asked about the perceived injustice on victims of the bandits with the demand for amnesty, the Islamic scholar said he has been a victim of banditry, too.

He said his brother was kidnapped and almost five million naira was paid as ransom to rescue him.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Gumi has also warned against the removal of the embattled minister of communications and digital economy, Isa Pantami, saying Nigeria would regret such action.

Many Nigerians and groups have been asking President Muhammadu Buhari to sack Pantami after videos from the 2000s resurfaced wherein the minister was seen supporting Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Pantami has, however, recanted his past views on the terror groups, saying his position at the time was based on his understanding as a teenager. Reacting, Gumi said the allegations against the minister are unfounded and should be discarded.
