High Food Prices: Buhari, we Need to See You - Nigerian Market Women Lament

- Nigerian women are not finding the increased prices of foodstuff funny

The increase of food prices in Nigeria is becoming unbearable not only for buyers but also for those who trade in edibles.

A market woman who recently spoke with Legit.ng revealed that the number of persons who beg for food these days is more than those who actually have the means to feed themselves.

The female trader who did not reveal her identity explained that it cost a lot more now to feed a small family whose monthly income is the minimum wage of N30,000.

According to her, a family may end up spending not less than N5,000 per day on food going by the reality in market places.

The trader said although she has the money to afford foodstuff, she feels compassion for those who do not have the same financial standing as herself.

She gave an instance of a small bag of Semovita which has increased in price from N350 to N450, claiming that this is due to greed and selfishness on the part of some persons.

As a way forward, she said if meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari can solve the problem, market women should agree and do so.

Responding to the suggestion of price regulation and a downward review of the prices, she said that will be a welcome idea since it will benefit everyone.

Another trader wailed that sometimes she and her colleagues have to borrow money to buy what they sell as the hike in prices has drastically affected their capital.

She explained that contrary to what was obtainable, a bag of garden eggs is N12,000 while a handful of it which used to go for N50 is now N100.

Meanwhile, the leadership of cattle and foodstuff dealers decided to lift the blockade placed on the supply of food to the southern parts of Nigeria.

The group under the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN) arrived at the decision after a meeting with some governors in Abuja on Wednesday, March 3.
