PDP Suffers Huge Defeat as Tribunal Delivers Judgment on Ondo governorship Election

- An election tribunal has concluded its hearing on the Ondo governorship poll

The Ondo State Election Petitions Tribunal has upheld the election of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Leadership reported that the tribunal in a ruling on Tuesday, April 20, dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s candidate, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) challenging Akeredolu’s victory.

Justice Umar, who delivered the judgment via Zoom, stated that Jegede’s petition lacked jurisdictional merit.

According to the tribunal:

''The issue raised therein in this petition are settled issue of internal affairs and management of a political party which this Tribunal has no Jurisdiction.''

The Nation reported that the panel explained that following the ruling, Akeredolu and his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, were duly elected in the October 10 governorship election.

The publication stated that the Ondo governor in his reaction hailed Ondo residents for the confidence reposed in his administration.

He asked Jegede to join him in developing the state, saying there was no need for further litigations.

Meanwhile, the Ondo state government has petitioned the Nigerian police over alleged unlawful possession of official vehicles by Agboola Ajayi, the immediate past deputy governor.

The Nation reported that the state government accused the former deputy governor of refusing to return four official vehicles in his possession months after leaving office.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu's senior assistant on special duties and strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, signed the petition.

Odebowale said he has been mandated to recover all government properties still in the possession of former political office holders in the state, especially those who served in the immediate past administration.

In another report, a chieftain of the APC in Zamfara, Aminu Sani-Jaji, has said Governor Bello Matawalle is welcome to join the party.

The Guardian reported that Sani-Jaji made the statement at a press briefing in Gusau on Monday, April 19.

He stated that the Zamfara governor has the constitutional right to join any political party of his choice.
