Minutes after the death of Chadian leader, Idriss Deby, an interim president has been named by the country's transitional council of military officers.

Al-Jazeera reports that General Mahamat Kaka, the son of the deceased Chadian leader, has been revealed as the country's interim head of the state.

The army spokesman General Azem Bermendao Agouna made the disclosure in a broadcast on state television on Tuesday, April 20, Gulf Times reports.

The newly-elected leader died of injuries suffered on the frontline a day after he won a sixth term as the country's presidential election results were just released on Monday, April 19.

Deby's death is coming barely a month after John Magufuli, the president of Tanzania, died at the age of 61.

Magufuli's death was reportedly announced on Wednesday, March 17, by the vice president, Samia Suluhu Hassan.

His death also came five months after he won a second term election. The late president had attracted widespread criticism for his denial of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a related development, the death of Tanzania's president drew attention to the broader issue of how African nations manage successions when their leaders die while still in service.

Tanzania's Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in as the sixth president of the country a day after she announced the death of President Magufuli.

Suluhu, who read three oaths, took the oath of office at State House Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Friday, March 19. The new president, dressed in red and black, then proceeded to inspect a guard of honour mounted by the Tanzania Defence Forces.
