Ondo Election: Tribunal announces date for Akeredolu, Jegede's fate

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state would know his fate on Tuesday, April 20, concerning his victory at the October 20 governorship election.

Eyitayo Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had filed a petition challenging Akeredolu’s win.

The Punch reports that the Ondo state election petition tribunal sitting in Akure rescheduled the date to deliver its judgement to Tuesday instead of Wednesday, April 21, that was initially announced.

The tribunal in a notice issued on Monday evening, by the secretary, informed parties involved in the case that the date had changed, Channels TV reports.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Jegede, a governorship candidate on the platform of the PDP had asked a tribunal to sack Governor Akeredolu for not been validly nominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Jegede told the Ondo state election petition tribunal on Tuesday, January 12, that the nomination of Akeredolu as the APC governorship candidate was contrary to the party's constitution and the Nigerian constitution.

He argued that the APC caretaker chairman and governor of Yobe state, Mai Mala Buni, cannot function in duo capacity as a sitting governor and as the caretaker chairman of the party.

In a related development, the governor of Ondo state recorded a victory in a case instituted against him over his emergence as the candidate of the APC during the governorship election in the state.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, December 15, 2020, dismissed the suit, saying it was statute-barred.

The plaintiff, Nathaniel Adojutelegan, who participated in the party's primary but lost, had challenged the adoption of the indirect mode of primary for the selection of a candidate for the election.
