Upon his return from the United Kingdom on Thursday, April 15, President Muhammadu Buhari revealed what procedures he took before appointing the new acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba.
First, President Buhari disclosed that IGP Baba has been a part of the system all along before his latest elevation to become the police boss, adding that the new appointee went through all the necessary series of training, The Nation reports.

The Cable also reported that the president noted that a committee was formed by the ministry of police affairs that submitted a list of names from which Baba was chosen.
The Nigerian leader said:
“Well, we went through the system. There was a committee by the Minister of Police Affairs. They gave me some names and he happened to be the one chosen."
Earlier, President Buhari had given his reason for choosing IGP Baba. The Nigerian leader on Thursday said he picked Baba to head the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) because he had the necessary experience to perform in the position.
Buhari made this known while speaking with state house correspondents after his arrival from the United Kingdom where he went on medical vacation for two weeks.
Recall that Buhari had approved the appointment of Baba as the acting IGP with immediate effect.
The minister of police affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dangyadi, announced this on Tuesday, April 6, while briefing journalists.
His appointment was subject to the approval of the Council of State meeting expected to be convened soon.
Before this, Buhari and the Attorney-General of the Federation(AGF), Abubakar Malami had argued the president was empowered by the constitution to retain Mohammed Adamu as the IGP for as long as it suited him.

Their position was contained in the joint response they filed to a suit instituted by a lawyer, Maxwell Opara, challenging, among others, the president’s decision to extend Adamu’s stay as the IGP for another three months from Monday, February 1, when he ordinarily should have retired.
