- Real Madrid vs Barcelona lived up to it's pre-match razzmatazz as it was explosive

- Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos scored for Los Blancos in the entertaining fixture

- Zinedine Zidane's side are now temporarily top of the La Liga standings

Hard-fighting Real Madrid escaped with a 2-1 win over eternal rivals Barcelona in Saturday night's edition of the El Clasico.

It was fight to finish at the Valdebebas as the La Liga enters into the home stretch, but Madrid are now on top of the standings, with Atletico having a game in hand.

Vinicius Junior had his first drive at the Barcelona defence. After Ter Stegen cleared awkwardly for the second time in the first five minutes, Vinicius received the ball and dashed into the Barcelona box. But he overran it a little and Ter Stegen made a fine save.

And Real Madrid opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Lucas Vazquez found space down the right and played a low cross in to Benzema, that the striker managed to backheel perfectly.

There wasn't much space, but the Frenchman found it and put the ball exactly where Ter Stegen couldn't reach. That's quite a way to open the scoring in a Clasico. 1-0 to Real Madrid.

Toni Kroos made it 2-0 for Real Madrid in the 28th minute. The German took a freekick that deflected off Sergino Dest and then it basically went through Jordi Alba on the line.

The left-back tried to get his head on it, but couldn't react in time and it glanced off his forehead and in.

Barcelona pulled one back on the hour mark as Oscar Mingueza surely wouldn't have expected to be playing in title decider Clasico back at the start of the season.

The young centre-back has become a regular for Barcelona and he made it 2-1. It's not too pretty a finish, but he did well to fire in after a Jordi Alba cross into the box. Barcelona are very much back in this.

After several attempts by both teams to get yet another goal, there were no further ado as that was how it ended; Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez is being linked with a possible return to England club Liverpool as reports say the Uruguayan could return this summer.

The striker has inspired Diego Simeone’s side to the top of La Liga with 19 goals this season, but rumours have it that he is having a difficult relationship with the manager.

It was gathered that Suarez included a clause in the contract to see him leave in the summer of 2021 without any penalty.
