Joy as Federal Government and Striking Doctors Reach an Agreement

- The hardship caused by the strike of medical doctors across Nigeria may soon end

- The government and the doctors reached an agreement late on Friday, April 9 and even signed a joint communique to the effect

The federal government and striking doctors have reached an agreement and the current industrial action by the medical workers may soon be called off.

This is according to Premium Times which reported that the agreement was reached after a meeting of a federal government delegation and representatives of the doctors on Friday, April 9.

The report added that a communique revealing the details of the agreement was jointly signed by the government delegation and members of the leadership of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) which represented the doctors.

On its part, Channels TV reported that NARD said it may call off the strike on Saturday, April 10 after the meeting with government representatives in Abuja, the federal capital.

The TV station reported that NARD’s National President, Dr. Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, said the doctors were satisfied with the agreement reached with the government.

Uyilawa signed the joint communique with the federal government alongside Phillips Ekpe, NARD's general secretary.

Speaking for the government after the meeting, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said a five-man committee will look into some of the doctors’ demands.

Legit.ng reported on Thursday, April 1 that members of NARD commenced a nationwide strike over poor facilities and the government's shabby treatment of its members.

According to the association, Nigeria loses over N576 billion ($1.2billion) yearly to medical tourism lamenting that Nigeria has no three-star government-owned tertiary health institution.

But the strike by the NARD has already taken its toll, causing some serious havoc in the country.

Recently, it caused the death of a newborn at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
